Forest was born and raised on Maui, Hawaii. Kim is part Hawaiian and was born and raised on the mainland US. We met at Cornell University in New York, where we enjoyed rock climbing and the changing seasons. After graduating we moved back to Maui, switched to surfing, and worked in the real estate and hotel industries.
In 1997 we entered the conservation industry, working as biologists for the University of Hawaii, and doing environmental consulting as Starr Environmental. We provided botanical (plant), entomological (insect), and faunal (bird and bat) surveys in support of planning, research, and management.
We focused on Maui, but worked from Kona to Kure Atoll.
We retired from UH in 2023 and from consulting in 2025, and have been enjoying the extra time in the garden and at the beach, especially wingfoiling and paddling canoes.
